(DAYTON, OHIO) … The Greater Dayton RTA recognizes the hard work, dedication, and personal sacrifice of its drivers and mechanics during the COVID health emergency. In 2020, six drivers and four service repair technicians made over $100,000 in regular pay and overtime helping keep the system running for the region’s essential workers who depended on RTA to get to their jobs. The agency is now hiring more than 30 drivers to join this amazing team.
RTA employs about 230 big bus drivers, and is looking to hire 30 or more over the next several months. The agency provides all training, including training and certification for a Commercial Drivers’ License, or CDL. With over 65 percent of daily trips on RTA being made for work-related transportation, the agency felt it was imperative to maintain full service in 2020 so that essential workers could continue to work. Throughout the pandemic it has kept its 675 employees working. Retirements, along with the need to serve new employment areas, has created the need for additional exceptional employees who can help the agency keep the Miami Valley moving, said RTA CEO Bob Ruzinsky.
“Our full team continues to report to work each and every day to ensure that residents of Montgomery County who need transportation to work, medical appointments, and educational opportunities during the pandemic receive those rides,” Ruzinsky said. “We appreciate the ongoing efforts of our essential workers to ensure other essential workers can continue to work.”
RTA CDL bus drivers earn $57,000+ a year base pay after seven years of service. Overtime opportunities can significantly increase those earnings. The agency follows all Ohio Department of Transportation guidelines for work safety, with a minimum of eight hours of time-off offered between shifts. All work is locally based. RTA also offers great benefits including medical, dental, life, paid time off, and membership in the state retirement system.
