V for vaccination

Dayton, Ohio — “V for vaccination!” The Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority is making it easy for people to get a free ride to their COVID-19 vaccination appointment following the expansion of eligibility to include those age 16 and older by Public Health- Dayton and Montgomery County. Anyone who is heading to or from a vaccination appointment can give an RTA bus driver the V sign, also known as the peace sign, when they board to ride at no charge. This expansion of RTA’s free ride program for vaccination appointments is effective immediately. 

Riders can show drivers a “V for vaccination” on any fixed-route bus, and/or proof of their appointment. The hand signal is easy for drivers to see through the barriers placed on all buses to limit exposure between RTA drivers and passengers. It’s also a fun way to share that you’re getting vaccinated, said Bob Ruzinsky, RTA Deputy CEO. 

“We want to ride safely together, and the best way for that to happen is for people to get vaccinated,” Ruzinsky said. “We’re making it easy for people to get to their COVID-19 vaccination appointments, and by showing drivers a ‘V for vaccination’ we’re making it easy for passengers to let RTA drivers know they are getting a free ride to help slow the spread of this disease.” 

Those not able to ride a fixed-route bus can also schedule a trip to their COVID vaccine appointment on RTA’s Connect service. Connect reservations can be made seven days a week, between the hours 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., and same day reservations will be considered subject to availability. RTA or one of its qualified providers will provide transportation service. To schedule a trip, call (937) 425-8300, option #6. All those who are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine and have an appointment are eligible for this free service. 

In addition, the RTA is offering a free shuttle service from Wright Stop Plaza, 4 S. Main St., Dayton, to vaccination sites at the Dayton Convention Center and Bethesda Temple. This allows those heading to an appointment to have a direct connection to these sites, without worrying about the weather or parking.
