Fare Capping

What is fare capping?

Automatically save money with fare capping!

To get started using Fare Capping on mobile, download Transit app and create an account. Add a credit or debit card to your account and add funds. Once funds are in your account and ready to use, tap “ride now” when you’re boarding to open your account and scan your barcode on the payment reader.

If you're using a Tapp Pay card, make sure your card has funds. You can load funds in the Tapp Pay Hub, at any payment kiosk at the RTA transit centers, or through one of RTA's partner sales outlets located here.

Each time you scan your Tapp Pay barcode via a mobile phone, or tap your Tapp Pay card on the payment reader, it will subtract the cost of one ride from your account. Once your number of rides has reached $4, Tapp Pay’s regular daily max rate, or $2 for eligible reduced fare customers, any other trips you take that service day will be free!

Once your number of rides has reached the daily cap on Tapp Pay any other trips you take that day will be free! By loading just $4.00 on your account at the beginning of the day after your second trip, all rides are free and your account balance can stay at $0 for the rest of the day. That means no matter how many trips you take, your tapp pay account will cap at $4, saving you money.

For reduced fares, applicable ID is required upon boarding after scanning and the Tapp Pay reduced rate of $1.00 will be deducted from your account, until your reach the Tapp Pay reduced day pass rate of $2.00. Just remember to scan every time you board, even after you reached the cap for that day. Don’t worry, no more funds will be taken from your account.

The same principle applies for monthly travel. Once your number of scans or taps has reached the cost of what would equate to $55–Tapp Pay’s regular monthly max rate – you can ride free for the rest of the rolling 31-day period. On day 32, the clock starts over.

You must have enough funds in your account in order to use Tapp Pay when you ride. Customers who receive the “Last Ride!” yellow warning on the payment reader, will need to load more funds before their next ride.

If enough funds are not loaded to your Tapp Pay account, the payment reader will make a sound, flash red, and you’ll receive a “Lack of Funds” message. This indicates you do not have enough funds and will need to add funds to your account in order to board.

Remember to always scan your Tapp Pay app within Transit, or tap your Tapp Pay card on the payment reader to pay your fare, rack up your rides, and benefit from fare capping. The more you ride, the more you save with Tapp Pay!

You can view your account balance at any time by selecting the gear icon in the top corner and viewing your settings in Tapp Pay. The value in your account will be displayed under Tapp Pay in the menu.

You’ll notice your account balance will stay the same no matter how many times you scan once you’ve been capped. If you’re unsure if you’re reached your 31-day cap, call our call center at (937) 425-8300.

If you still have previously purchased Tapp Pay passes in your account, you can use those passes by going to your Transit profile under the gear icon and selecting the ticket you wish to use. This is strongly recommended before utilizing fare capping as you only have 365 days to use purchased bus passes before they expire.

No matter what your balance is, you can add funds to your account anytime, anywhere using Tapp Pay. You will only ever be charged for the rides you take.

Tapp Pay and fare capping allow for travel and financial flexibility, meaning you don’t need to try to guess the number of trips you’ll make in a given period. It solves the problem of people who can afford the least up-front costs paying the most.
